Safe Spaces aimed to foster ethical media practices in Taiwan’s presidential election coverage. The objective was to build a coalition among key media stakeholders and drive a commitment to fair, transparent, and respectful reporting practices throughout the campaign. This initiative sought to enhance media integrity and counter disinformation during a critical period for Taiwanese democracy.

Approach

We leveraged our expertise in lobbying and coalition building to create a strong alliance among diverse stakeholders, including RSF, the Center for Communication and Media Research (CCMR), and the Taiwan Media Watch Foundation (TMWF). By developing a targeted lobbying strategy, we engaged directly with media outlets, advocating for adherence to ethical journalism standards. Our efforts also included coordinating campaign messaging across over 20 organizations and organizing events such as press conferences to elevate the initiative’s visibility and impact.

Result

As a result of these efforts, six leading Taiwanese media outlets committed to ethical election coverage, prioritizing fair reporting, transparency, and respect for privacy. The coalition’s work contributed to a unified stance among diverse media organizations, reinforcing the importance of media integrity. Furthermore, this initiative sparked public discussions about the role of trustworthy information in a democracy, highlighting the value of ethical journalism during a pivotal election period in Taiwan.
